FeaturesUpdate Course Materials

You always have access to the latest publisher course materials* with the CourseCompass update materials feature. When new course materials become available, CourseCompass flags this information on the My CourseCompass page via a New Edition/Version available link next to courses created using earlier course materials. Also, instructors who create a new course by copying an existing one can simultaneously update the course content to the latest available publisher course materials.

  • CourseCompass carries forward customizations from the course to be copied, saving you the time of having to alter those portions of the course again. For example, assessments for which an instructor has spent time reordering, adding or deleting questions will be copied over to the new course and set to unavailable in the Assessment Manager. Then you can set to available those assessments that you want to be visible in your new course.

  • CourseCompass updates course content to more recent publisher content by creating the course using a newer edition or version of the course materials. For example, when a new edition textbook is published, CourseCompass course materials associated with an earlier edition textbook are no longer the latest and will eventually be retired. New version course materials are available within CourseCompass when content quality has been improved in ways that are not tied to a new edition.

To access this feature
You can access this feature in any of the following ways. Whichever way you choose, CourseCompass will present you with the available updated or replacement options for the publisher content of the course being copied.

  • Click the "New edition/version available!" link
When a new edition or version of a course becomes available in the CourseCompass catalog, a "New edition available!" or "New version version!" link, respectively, appears next to the course name in your My CourseCompass page and Course List page. To view the Course List page, click the Courses tab.

  • Click the Copy to New Edition/Version button on the Create a Course page
To view the Create a Course page, click the Create a Course button from the My CourseCompass page.

  • Click the Copy an Existing Course button
If the course you want to copy has new or replacement publisher course materials available, CourseCompass presents you with these options. This is true, regardless of whether the course you are copying is one of your own or that of another instructor.

*Course materials in CourseCompass can include publisher authored assessments, multimedia, an electronic version of the textbook and other materials that complement a textbook. When an instructor selects a set of ready-made course materials during course creation, these comprise the publisher content in a CourseCompass course.

When the new copied course has been created
The course you copied from remains intact until you decide to delete it. The new course bears a new Course ID, has a clean online gradebook (until students enroll), and you are notified via email when the course has been created. You will want to selectively integrate any customizations copied from the original course into the appropriate content areas of the new course, and if updating your course to a new edition of course materials, you should compare the contents of each customizations folder with the new textbook's course materials to be sure they are still applicable.
